Water Skiing

Water Skiing in Northern Michigan is a right of passage for many. We include 1 piece of equipment with boat rental.

Additional equipment for $9.50 per day.

According to WikiPedia:

Water skiing usually begins with a “deep water start” or a dock start. The skier crouches down in the water (knees bent, arms straight, leaning back, imagine sitting in a chair), with the ski tip(s) pointing up and the ski rope between the skis or, if using one ski, on either side of the ski. With one ski (slalom), the rope should be put on the left side if right foot leads, or the right side if the left foot leads. When the skier is ready, the driver accelerates the boat to pull the skier out of the water. The key to getting up is patiently staying in the crouched position, arms straight, and keeping balanced. The boat should do all the work, creating enough force between it and the ski, to pull the skier out of the water. Common mistakes are trying to stand up too early, breaking at the waist, and bending the arms.

In addition to the driver and the skier, a third person known as the spotter/observer must be present. The spotter’s job is to watch the skier, and inform the driver if the skier falls. Communication between the skier and the occupants of the boat is done with hand signals. It is the spotter’s job to watch the skier’s hand signals and pass on the messages to the driver. Such signals include: faster (thumb up), slower (thumb down), and stop (crossing the neck with your hand, in a cutting motion).

Wake board in Torch Lake or in Grand Traverse Bay!

Wakeboarding

Wake Boarding is becoming as popular as water skiing in Northern Michigan. We include 1 piece of equipment with boat rental.

Additional equipment for $9.50 per day.

According to Wikipedia:

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing techniques. The rider is usually towed behind a motorboat; typically at speeds of 18–24 miles per hour depending on the water conditions, board size, rider’s weight, and rider’s comfort speed.

Using edging techniques, the rider can move outside of the wake or cut rapidly in toward the wake. Jumps are performed by hitting the wake and launching into the air. This can also be done by hitting a kicker (a jump). There is also the slider (a rail bar)in which a rider approaches and rides along keeping his balance. Once a rider improves in the sport, he or she can progress to tricks high in the air. As the rope tightens the rider gains speed toward the wake. When the rider goes airborne, the tightened rope launches him. While in the air the rider attempts to do tricks.

Knee Boarding is a fun way to get above the water!

Knee Boarding

Knee Boarding is still popular in Northern Michigan. We include 1 piece of equipment with boat rental.
Additional equipment for $9.50 per day.

According to Wikipedia:

To get started, you simply need a tow rope, a kneeboard and a boat that can go about 15-20 mph. A benefit about kneeboarding is the start is fairly simple, and the rider does not need to travel very quickly. If the rider happens to fall, it usually does not discourage them from trying again. To do a start (known as the deepwater start), do as follows:

  1. Before you begin, loosen the strap to make it is as big as possible (making it easier to slip into while moving).
  2. Lie on the board on your stomach and put your elbows into the divits where your knees would go. Make sure the strap is in front of your elbows.
  3. Signal the boat driver to take off slowly and reach a speed of 12–15 miles per hour.
  4. In one motion, push your backside into the air, bringing your knees up to your elbows which are still on the board.
  5. Slowly sit back on your heels and lift your arms off the board.
  6. Let go with one hand and pull the strap over your knees and continue to inch forward until your knees are comfortably in the divits.
  7. Now, release the velco strap and pull it tight. Re-attach the velco the strap. It should be very snug, allowing you more control.

If you pull apart your knees the strap will go even tighter giving more control

  • Grab the handle with the other hand.
